Homelab
A homelab spilling a bit over into datacentres
It all starts with Natacha, a physical server that does most of the work without making a single sound. Around it, a few virtual machines, a house butler, and several VPSes rented from OVH and Ionos, because my homelab apparently needed more room. The result: a homelab spilling a bit over into datacentres.
Each one carries a name that references comics, picked to suit its job. Yes, even Buffalo Bill, who makes an appearance in Lucky Luke.
All these machines are linked together by a WireGuard VPN. So the server at home and the VPSes rented in datacentres talk to each other as if they were in the same room. Almost true.
The machines
-
Natacha
Physical server, running Windows
Core i5-12400, 128 GB of RAM. Storage in RAID: 2 TB NVMe SSD and 2 TB SATA SSD in RAID 1, 4 TB of HDD in RAID 1, 10 TB of HDD in RAID 0. Low power (about 50 W on average) and totally silent: 100% passive cooling, 2.5-inch drives.
The main machine, the one that runs the rest. It runs Windows, for various bad reasons.
-
Karaboudjan
Ubuntu virtual machine, inside Natacha
The container ship. It runs all my private services and apps: Forgejo, Sonar, Nexus, Bugsink, Dependency-Track, Renovate, Seafile, Linkding, Invidious, TT-RSS, Guacamole, and a few other specimens.
-
Obelix
OpenMediaVault virtual machine, inside Natacha
The big storage. It keeps all the files, so Natacha's disks actually do something.
-
Nestor
Home Assistant
The house butler: it turns the lights on, lowers the blinds and knows everything, without ever telling anyone, except me, by notification.
-
Buffalo Bill
Ionos VPS, 2 CPU, 2 GB of RAM
It runs my mail server, with the punctuality of a postman who never takes a holiday.
-
Walter
OVH VPS, 2 CPU, 2 GB of RAM
The entry point: everything coming from outside goes through it before being forwarded to my public services and websites. Walter would have loved to be in Natacha 🥵🫣 He had to settle for a datacentre, with air conditioning as his only company. That's a real cold shower ❄️
-
Caligula Minus
OVH VPS, 2 CPU, 4 GB of RAM
Backup muscle: it hosts some of my services and public websites, and has more memory than its little friends.
-
Gabrièle
Ionos VPS, 1 CPU, 1 GB of RAM
The test infrastructure, where I break things for pretend before breaking them for real.
